Play me:
Dear Friend, hello,
It is Monday, January 8, it’s 8:08 a.m., I write to send you New Year’s greetings, I hope your last year wound down well & this new one holds some promise for you — well, it holds some type of promise for us all! So let me say instead, I hope there’s something you’re looking forward to in the months, the year, ahead.
This missive — have you noticed it yet? — will have, I mean, it HAS — 3 ways you can take it in — you can parse this image of the letter I’m writing today (your yesterday), you can read the text I’ll type in below the pictures tonight or tomorrow (your yesterday eve, your this morning), or listen to the recording I’ve made — will make — once this letter is penned.
I’ve been banging around on the Substack pipes — new house, gotta sort out the cabinets and which faucets work in what way, & after today (our yesterday, our tomorrow), I think I’ll have it sorted for the year coming forward, the one on the way — the one in front of us, the one we’ve trod on already.
Sadly there’s no going back here, not in this letter, this year, this morning, and I got out of bed much later than I intended. It’s my first full week back to work. You too?
* * *
These stars to indicate the little pause I took to consider what one thing I might want to say to you today — & if I’d edited this letter meanwhile, would you know it? But my friend I will not lie to you —
A few years back (three) a Vedic astrologer told me I was entering an 18-year cycle commonly feared for its hallmarks of smoke and mirrors, its wrong turns & misdirections, lows that look like highs, highs that look like lows (well, that last pair of phrases are my embellishment), & he said, enjoy the ride. (Also, he laughed.) I think about this all the time! Hang on and enjoy the ride.
My transcendental meditation teacher told me recently that this is a Maharishi thing to say, enjoy the ride. As in, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the Beatles guru, David Lynch’s guide, that bringer of so many powerful practices to the West (despite what the naysayers say). (More on transcendental meditation in some future missive.) One of the regular reminders you’ll get from the TM teaching crew is to “take it as it comes” in meditation.
These little phrases sound a bit banal, don’t they, but they are little gifts, little pearls. Employed, for example, when your tire goes flat, you’re trapped in traffic, the dog bites you or has to go to the vet ($$$), your partner leaves — or you win the lotto, fall in love, your book gets published, yr kid gets a scholarship, whatever. That is, the good, the bad, the readymade, the poorly made (this post, this letter?).
So is that what I want to say? It seems ok.
For me and for you, as 2024 gets underway: Take it as it comes and enjoy the ride—
More soon,
xxx,
Suzanne
Love this so much, and loved the multiple ways to enter into this piece
